11-09-2009 STIRLING BRIDGE COMMEMORATION

Stirling Bridge
I’m Coming Home 2009

What can I Say ??? Fantastic what a night !!!!!.

This is the first time that most of the Strathleven Artizans had made it to this fantastic event as this normally falls on the same weekend as El Douglas Days in Teba. Due to a late date change by the Teba organizers we arrived back from Teba the day before (Thursday) so it finished off our holiday brilliantly.

On arrival at Stirling castle it was like a scene from Hampden Park with flags, banners, kilts and tartan everywhere.
On display was the biggest banner I have seen in a long time from the Rampant Lions Supporters Club from Dundee, the bright yellow could be seen from miles away what a brilliant banner !!!.
Other banners included the Armadale Tartan Army and the Crack of Dawn Tartan Army from Fraserburgh
Among the crowd was some well kent faces and a lot of new faces as well as the visitor from Nova Scotia.
The societies had turned out in great numbers which was good to see, they included Crann Tara, SNG, SRSM, The Society of William Wallace and the Artizans (40 Bowmen of St. Sebastian)(apologies to any one I missed out)

The very colourful parade marched off from the castle esplanade at 7.00pm and headed by the Alloa Bowmar Pipe band, down through Stirling en-route to the Old Stirling Bridge. At the site near the Old bridge, compared by Ted Christopher, we heard speeches from Duncan Fenton (Society of William Wallace) and the Provost of Stirling, Councillor Fergus Wood. After the laying of the wreath we then had the lone piper play a lament to our fallen heroes who we had come here to honour.
Afterwards Ted brought the proceeding to a closed and we all headed over to the Stirling Rugby Club for a brilliant night of entertainment.

Stirling Rugby Club
A Night of celebration commemorating the victory at Stirling Bridge
11th September 2009

On entering the hall which was like going into a large marquee, there was a stall were you could have your photo taken with a replica 'William Wallace sword' and the great man in the back ground.

Sitting at your table each person had a gift waiting for them, a glass plaque with some grass cuttings from the surrounding area of the “auld brig” , and verses commemorating this event, a very nice touch.
We also had the stalls with tee-shirts etc which was doing a roaring trade, the raffle table was loaded with prizes too.

We had the first public appearance of 4 Special Knights in the form of Sir James Douglas, Randolph, Keith and Malcolm Earl of Lennox who stood guard over the main stage and kept an eye on the crowd. The paintings were done by Scottish Artist Duncan Brown, as part of Strathleven Artizans Bannockburn ceiling, which will be in our new Heritage Centre. (see our website for detail).

The evenings entertainment got underway with the magic Ted Christopher doing what he does best. This was followed by Celtic Storm Dancers and Philip Barlow on pipes. We then had a cracking set from Clanadonia then a short break this was an opportunity for everyone to tuck into some stovies’ (magic) After the break we had Ted & Bannockburn who raised the bar once again and had the dance floor jumping with their Ceiledh section. We had the Tartan Specials do their thing then we had the raffle. There were plenty prizes to go round and a nice young lady from Dundee won the Bruce Seal, which we had donated to the raffle.

Strathleven Artizans (Duncan & Jim) presented to Duncan Brown (Artist) with a limited edition plaque from Teba, which was painted by a local woman aged 91, as a huge thank you and to show our appreciation for all the work he is putting into our Bannockburn ceiling “Thank you Duncan a true patriot of Scotland.”

We then had Ted and Bannockburn to bring the night to a closed but not before they had the whole place up dancing on the floor, the chairs and even some on tables.
The various Tartan Army groups were really going Barmy! A magic night was had by all. We have been to some great nights this year but this night takes some beating. So A BIG WELL DONE TO Ted Christopher and all his team for putting together and hosting a brilliant night of entertainment song and dance,…………….. well done one and all……………..I do hope that Teba does not clashed with Stirling Bridge next year as we would hate to miss it.!!!!!!

Big Thanks to all
