DUNFERMLINE HERITAGE TRUST
THE BRUCE DINNER (AT BROOMHALL)
COMPANY OF LORD & COUNTESS OF ELGIN
18 OCTOBER 2008

On Saturday evening the Strathleven Artizans were wined and dined in the company of Lord & Countess Of Elgin and special guests at their stately home of Broomhall in Dunfermline. Three lucky Artizans represented the organisation: Jim, Philip (piper) and Paul.

It was a privilege to enter the beautiful countryside housing Broomhall, driving through the gates and lands, stocked with roaming pheasants, planted with beautiful trees and shrubs and finally onto the main house itself.
As we drove up to the entrance of Broomhall the beautiful stately home stood out in all her magic, a wonderful spectacle that has housed generations of Lords and Countesses and filled to the brim with Bruce history.

A warm-hearted welcome entered us into this fine home and it wasn’t long before we were shaking hands and chatting to Lord Elgin about Bruce, Scotland and life in General. Clothed in Bruce colours and smiling he seemed pleased to see us. The feeling was mutual.
Philip gave Lord Elgin a private rendition of ‘ode Robert Bruce’ in his library where he listened with interest and looked in deep thought.

King Robert the Bruce was there too

On the agenda there was talks from Lord Elgin about the Homecoming arrangements for 2009 and also the close ties to the Strathleven Artizans and references to King Robert the Bruce when he lived and died in Renton. Between courses Lord Elgin would entertain as any good host should, touching into the past by sending laughter and amusement around the halls of Broomhall as his ancestors did before him.

There was Bruce auction items including an enlarged pewter seal of King Robert and a Bruce oak clock made and donated from the Artizans, a Bruce painting, tickets for 6 at a sell out show, a Bruce necklace, an Alhambra football evening, a beautiful stone carving specially commissioned for the Bruce dinner and not forgetting a reproduction of the original Bruce Sword from Bannockburn. A sum of £2,000 was made during the evening and goes towards the homecoming events next year, and a huge thank you goes out to all who bid in this very enjoyable and successful evening.

The Artizans were fortunate enough to get permission from Lord and Countess Of Elgin to photograph and film parts of the evening which will be posted on the Strathleven Artizan website.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank the Lord and Countess of Elgin for their kind hospitality by making our visit to Dunfermline a very enriched and enjoyable one.
