King Robert suffered through his life from a debilitating illness. At times he would be low for weeks. At one recorded bout it was said he couldn’t move any of his limbs and was bereft of speech until it passed.
If ill health got so bad he was escorted around in a litter from place to place.
But these isolated attacks would always pass and he could carry forward his amazing and courageous part in Scottish history. By Paul Hunter
‘Schiehallion’
King Robert visited the mystical Mount Schiehallion before the battle of Bannockburn. Mount Schiehallion was known for its mysterious ancient past connected with the secret Culdee practices and the spiritual enlightenment properties of this awe inspiring world quartz monument, beautifully situated in Glen Lyon in the heart of Perthshire. Who knows what mystical and spiritual initiations and visions were seen here within the Culdee school. Was King Robert shown his future part in Scottish history? We will never know. By Paul Hunter
‘Contemplation’
As King Robert arrives back at his beloved manor house in the Parish of Cardross (modern day Renton) he must have sat alone in his private room (the King’s chamber) and contemplated on his journey through history many times. The loss of his siblings through his fight for independence campaigns and how the women and children in his life were being caged like animals, being kept as prisoners in England must have constantly plagued his mind. With such hardships including his illness, loss of closest companions and the struggle of his people he must have been a very strong believer in his own destiny. As history records his resolve and belief in his country he must have been a very unique strong minded and focused human being, so we can allow this peoples King that human touch to lean on his ability to contemplate. ‘The light’
The Culdee mysticism receiving God’s light and vision for Scotland. This ancient knowledge thread runs through the very core of Scotland in her history and future. ‘King Robert the Bruce Manor House’
There are no pictures of King Robert’s manor house only manuscripts describing of what was housed there. The Strathleven Artizans decided to make the written evidence come alive into an impression to give some idea of what this beautiful middle age manor house would been like situated on the picturesque banks of the River Leven. The Bruce family travelled and lived all over Scotland but this is the only place where King Robert finally settled and lived his life to the end. By Paul Hunter
King Robert the bruce on his throne
King Robert the Bruce on his throne with his beloved hobby of hawking and his son David by his side. I wanted him to look like a man from the middle ages, hammered and shaped by a brutal time in Scotland. It was important for me to have him looking like a warrior in King's clothing rather than the opposite. By Paul Hunter
