03-10-2009 ARCHERY PRACTICE FOR THE ARTIZANS

Funny capers at the archery.

Today in Tontine Park, Renton there were some funny capers going on as a group gathered to shoot a few arrows. The general consensus, was we need a lot more practice.

A big thank you to Cameron Murray who had arranged a few days ago to come to Renton and meet up with some of the bowmen in order that we could have a wee practice in the art of Archery.

The bowmen who attended were Duncan Thomson, Jim Tannock, Frank Boyd, Gordon Aitken, Christine and Dave Murdoch, along with Cameron. We gathered at Tontine Park at 10.30am where we spent the next 3 hours or so shooting a few arrows. Most of them went astray and Jim even managed to break one !!.
Well, a few did hit the target with the pensioner being the first of the bowmen to hit home. To his credit he did manage to hit the target twice, well to be honest he was only about 15 feet from it the second time.
The archery session did draw some interest from some locals and workmen, so we invited them to have a shot.. They all enjoyed themselves as we the Bowmen did too.
As well as the target practice we all had a go at some long range shooting, with a few of the guys getting a good distance i.e the length of a football pitch.
There were a few Benny Hill moments with the likes of arrows falling off and some arrows landing at the archer’s feet, it was a great laugh and everybody had a fantastic time.
The 40 Bowmen would like to thank Cameron very much for coming to Renton and supplying us with his bows and arrows and his time, we look forward to doing it again some time soon.
We also took the opportunity to try out one of the bows we made ourselves and it was a great feeling, when we fired off the first arrow and to our amazement it didn’t break and we did get a good distance with this long bow too.
We then all headed back to the Heritage centre for tea and coffee and a pleasant few hours talking all things Scottish.

Thanks to Cameron and all the Bowmen who made it along today at such short notice.
Also big Thanks to David Murdoch (pensioner) for putting together the video from today and to Christine for supplying tea, coffee and cakes.

Yours Bowman
Jim Tannock.
