ABOUT US

The Constitution.

"To promote and benefit the people from the area known as Strathleven and its environs, by advancing social, educational and recreational opportunities. To promote and undertake activities relating to the local history and heritage. To improve health and well-being, also to promote all and any objectives for the benefits of the community. Strathleven Artizans are now and hereafter deemed by law to be charitable."

We the Strathleven Artizans.

As a working voluntary group we aim to promote historical links in Strathleven towards King Robert the Bruce and King David II. Other subjects will include "Tobias Smollet", the "Turkey Red Dye Works" also the waterways such as the river Leven which flows through Renton village towards the river Clyde. We also aim to rebuild King Robert the Bruce's Manor House at "Dalquhurn Point" (see ancient map), or within that area. Our ambitions are to promote tourism, employment, and let our history help with the future.

Renton villlage lies on the west bank of the river Leven, just north of Dumbarton, a little bit south of Balloch, Loch Lomond. The village and wider district of Strathleven is renowned for its substantial recent history attached to the Turkey Red cotton industry. We also have a unique medieval history of national importance which is associated with King Robert the Bruce and the ancient crown lands which are now the heart of our village.

Strathleven Artizans and the local Community wish to share our particular heritage story as part of the Village Redevelopment and Social Inclusion Programme. We have identified that a possible way forward with this is to restore the ruined Millburn Church (see above left), and to use this building as a Village Heritage Centre dedicated to the Turkey Red Dye Industry, and to incorporate the local aspect of our King Robert the Bruce Story.
